Work continues with the gear bays and wings.

I want to reach my second milestone, attaching the wing section to the fuselage.
Was doubting should I do it before weathering the gear bays or not.

Image

Decided then to do the weathering process first. Definitely easier this way, as the gear bay of a Phantom is quite cramped
(in this scale at least :-D )

First step, as the method I'm using, is simplyt to dry brush the details using either Tamiyas X-11 or Hobby Colors H8 for this process.

Image

And then some oil washes
The oil wash in this case does not represent "dirt" as such, but highlights the beautiful details.

I used Raw umber color, but it's too invisible when drying up, so will still continue with a black oil-wash to accentuate the details even more.
Image

A lot of nice detailing that will not be visible, as here the "air exhaust outlet" bay (I like when Tamiya describes what part or detail I am actually building)

Image

and here the bay is "filled", practically everything is disappearing from sight..
:bag:

Image

The goal is, by the end of today (europe time), the wings are mated with the fuselage.

And yes, the wings are attached to the fuselage!

Next episode will be the air intakes, where I will do a small adjustment in the build process.

Tamiya tells to glue the air intake tunnel halves (parts B8 & B10 in the picture) first, before attaching them to the air intake. I changed the order slightly, by attaching first B10 into C45 and then primed & painted the parts, which I find an easier approach. The B8 piece can then be attached after all paintwork is done.

Image

Pieces are primed and painted, again with Insignia white. Just to give slighlty different tone of white.

Continued the work with the air intakes

Good fit, the 3 piece construction in the picture stays together without any masking tape.

Starts to look as a Phantom :-)

And into the paintbooth

The "engines" added into the end of the air intake tunnel

Next step to add some tiny decals inside the air intakes

Well look at those… :hmm: how much of the seam can be seen on the intake duct trunks?

They look like they fit very snug.
March as one, Don't look back
Odin's sons... Attack!
Unleash hell! Do not repent! Warfare grants us no lament
Let your weapons slash and tear This is no place for fear
Hold the lines! Move as one! In unity our victory's won
Our shields will form a mighty wall
United we shall never fall

Re: Kari's bench 2021 --> Tamiya 1:48 Phantom II update

The air intakes need a decal / stencil just inside the opening, which will not really be visible afterwards-
Nevertheless, I planned to add the decals as instructed, also to see how Tamiyas stencil decals will look like.
I have my fears..

I use Tamiyas own decal setting solution, Mark fit. There is a stronger version also on the market, but that I don't have.
Image

The decal came off nicely, after being in the warm bath for about 15 seconds.
Image

The detail level of the decal is really astonishing, taking in consideration the size.
Image

The decal film is visible when looking from a certain angle, so I need to think if I still should go one step further and buy Mark Fit extra strong.. :hmm:

Luckily nothing I need urgently, will take some time before the decaling party starts..

"Pretty good fit" said the Finnish guy.

This WIP is a pure advertisement for the kit. I'm totally hyped to start mine. Really enjoying it, Kari!
