I wonder if Northrop ever contemplated such changes to their original design....

Probably not . These are just thoughts of a guy from good old europe. Sone modifications added.

What are those?

Those were the NATO code names of some Soviet radar guided air to air missiles. AA-3 Anab, AA-7 Apex, and AA-10 Alamo. All are rough equivalents in role of the Sparrow being Semi Active Radar Homing and medium range. The AA-4 Ash and AA-6 Acrid were much bigger and heavier in that role, being designed as bomber destroyers with longer range as well.
