Primer looks really nice. I had to do a double take because at first glance, it looks like the color of molded plastic.

Carlos! Always a pleasure to follow your work. What was the motivation behind the choice of primer? Do you like this brand better than Tamiya’s own or the other one I use whose name escapes me lol! Mr Primer lol! Surfacer! It’s been awhile.

Bruce, the primer choice was purely by happenstance - being in the right place at the right time. The guy who owns True Color Paints is a member of IPMS Phoenix. Every meeting he brings in paints to go with whichever kits are being raffled off, plus a few samples of new products to give away to the members to try out. At the November meeting he brought in some different primers as well as whatever paints he brought in, and I chose this one to try out. Using the rattle can sure was easier than thinning and using my airbrush in my normal manner, then clean up afterwards. The dark side- quicker, easier, more seductive, are rattle can primers.

Thank you Stuart. As usual, the hit and miss of angst for me is when the painting starts…
So over the past several days I’ve started painting. I used Gunze Aqueos RLM 78 for the undersides. Which turned out ok over the dark primer
Then Gunze Aqueous FA 34102 for the topside base green… which had minimal tonal contrast over the dark gray primer in the lighting of my work area. It really doesn’t show up in the photos
The speckling is there in sunlight to the Mk.I eyeball, but not so visible here. And in the meantime, research turned up that the kit markings for Pokryshkin’s mount, White 5, was an early production Mig-3, while this kit is a late production Mig-3. So a bit more research turned up another Mig-3 that he flew, White 67, which was a late production model. And it was also in a two tone Green & Black scheme, so I used Tamiya Semi Gloss Black, masked with Silly Putty for the hard edge pattern.
Not too much farther to go now…
