I really stopped to think about what you wrote, Stuart. I have had a horrible horrible horrible weekend, so having something good to think about was a refreshing moment in between a broken drain/flooded apartment/broken keyboard and I think I cracked a tooth or a filling popped out but my tooth hurts buddy so very intriguing method of choosing projects on your end, which gave me much to think about. I am pretty sure I am probably the more common "choose the subject first," however, but-but-but I do have a fondness for oddball kits in much the same manner as my father had a fondness for oddball cars and trucks, so I could see myself being seduced by plastic... especially sexy Zoukei-Mura sprues! Thankfully ZM will be releasing the Horten in 1/72 and 1/144! So, I expect to see a few builds happen here!

I need to reconnect with this project in a big way.... hello!

I'll have to take back my comment on those B-25 sprues. I thought I was looking at the 1/32 HK kit! Given that it is a 1/72 Mitchell, the panel lines aren't THAT bad and the soft details in the cockpit can be forgiven.

I like that Mustang color scheme! Looking forward to seeing more work on it!

I'm STILL not in the modeling mood. Right now, I am contemplating fishing tackle and am embarking on a little mission to soup up a reel that I just bought.

John, no problem about the mojo. Maybe we an set up a "Non-Modeling Hobbies" sub forum for members to show pics from other hobbies like this. I for one would love to see John's souped up reel. Not to mention pics of all the fish he catches with it.

Bruce, I hope the tooth is healing well now. I never knew about those pencils. Do tell more. I might have to look into getting some to try and draw in my panel lines too.

Duke—

Derwent were the pencils assigned in art school; I used Faber Castell during the early days just out of art school, and now I use these Staedtlers. Reasons: little to no breakage, ability to handle fine lines without smearing and also erase beautifully. In this regard, they are superior to Derwent and the Faber Castell brands. I also went through a mechanical pencil phase and I would imagine a good .5mm lead mechanical pencil would be a great choice for drafting panel lines on the plastic blueprint of the aircraft, however, I really like the control of the traditional wood clad pencil—akin to using a blade with a wood handle versus a metal one, methinks.

Also: a good sharpener is necessary. I like Moebius und Ruppert (M+R)’s “Elliptical swing double hole” with magnesium blades.

Bruce, you're welcome. I also remember the Faber-Castells from my days in art school. I'll go check out those Staedtler pencils when I can. Meanwhile, I do have some .05 mechanical pencils I can fall back on.

Duke—after reading your reply, I was remembering an early lesson I learned about using the best tool for the job! I liked using .03mm on the 1/72 Horten very much. I actually find the smaller size mechanical tips—minus the lead—to be useful for opening and cleaning cowling and landing gear coverings.

I just wanted to add again my gratitude for your thoughts and replies. Being part of the forum has really transformed my approach for the better, and I know Maddog Industries is an important part of my educational experiences. TGIF!

Mustang—everybody who follows this one— Matthew and I met. There were two issues with the base, the first one was cosmetic and the second was the design of the support that needed to be finessed. Matthew is out of town until the 23rd, his son's birthday is on the 24th, so after that.... We also pinky-pacted to try out working on effects projects together because we get along and this would be good for us overall—so we have some other irons heating up suddenly as well. I don't want this to come across as a weak reason not to be working like crazy on this project. The lesson I have yet to learn from you, Joe (and you cautioned this as well) concerned starting too many projects at once... but it's really about completion. I'm sorting through my inventory into kits I will build and kits I bought in a collector's frame of mind—and I will be culling the ones from the collection. However, I do, absolutely must finish this particularly project so I have to carve out some time. I don't know when, exactly, though.
