And adding to Stiks very good information package, there are of course a number of different decal setting solutions "out there".
Sometimes you need a stronger product for thicker decals, more "rough" surface etc.

I use with success both Microscales products, but my absolute favorite now is the Decal setting "Strong" by Daco products.

Adding also to this discussion, as said about a clear coat application... If you use Future make sure you give it a good couple days to cure before using decal set. It can cause it to "haze' around the decal. Worst case scenario if it does happen a light amount of Future brushed over the affected area will make it disappear...... Hope this helps and doesn't add confusion to the subject...

I found a method that works well for me. I have a very small, very fine paintbrush. I brush the decal off the backing and onto the model and brush it gently into place. Once I got the hang of it, it became a relaxing activity.

Decals are looking good! I think decal placement is one of my least favorite things to do in modeling. Especially when confronted with a lot of small stenciling... very difficult to work up the motivation. I can't imagine what it's like to do an F4 Phantom model! Your Von Werra Emil is looking very good!

Well shit...

Went to pick old Emil up and inspect the job I’d done wiping the excess sludge wash off -first attempt using dissolved soft pastel dust- and dropped it. Landing gear broke in two places: at the nub where it connects and right above the wheel.

Also, one of the decals I’d applied before I was made aware of the magic of setting solution began to peel off (I thought I’d hit it with enough gloss coat, but I guess I was wrong, lesson-leaened, don’t use rattle can gloss coat, spray gloss clear through your airbrush).

On the bright side, the sludge wash worked as expected. And I guess I’ve also learned never to attach landing gear until the project is done.
