It may be a downer but there is always a door somewhere opening up. Don’t lose hope. I guy I know got let go from one of our subcontractors which he was not happy about but he found a better paying and actual job the next day. Just keep at it my friend!

I airbrushed Gunze’s version of Aircraft OD this morning. I am thinking I will bring this along to construction finish then add the top desert camouflage. I may keep the Olive Drab and find a factory finished K-1 photo as reference for how these aircraft left the factory. Note: I removed the seat for the painting + masking steps.

Bruce, you’re doing just fine in your airbrushing. But I do say you need to do this in a lovely shade of desert sand... the 57th deserves no less. They were one of the first US organized and based fighter units to go into action against the Axis. They were the first USAAF Fighter Group in the Western Desert during the Allies most desperate hour there.

Absolutely. I am using the Olive Drab layer as the factory paint. A lot of early P-40s were ferried over in OD then repainted (Dana Bell being quoted, on Britmodeler, I think) and I believe this is one based on the following: (1) the OD showing through behind the yellow lettering on the fin - too hard to mask that in the field, perhaps? and (2) the OD showing through as wear on the upper surface of the wing. Please correct me if I am mistaken.



Also at the moment I do not have the cash for more paint and do not have a sand equivalent at hand. What should I use anyway? Would you recommend an enamel preferably Gunze but Model Master as a color choice...? Thanks in advance!

Desert pink?

This is a really cool project Bruce, this kit has so much detail for being 1/72 the panel lines on the wings look amazing.

Cheers, mate. If other Special Hobby kits are designed with this level of detail, then they are worth checking out! Special Hobby = CMK Details. The only issues are fuselage seams. I am not sure if I am going to squeeze the fuse sides together - clamping them tight on top + bottom - or spreading the halves slightly. The canopy still should be test fitted.
