What a variety! I love the Corsair but am afraid to tackle one just yet. I like the non-US versions, since the US schemes are so often done.

Well it is said that color can have an effect upon appearance (does light gull gray make me look fat?) And I do know that the late model F4Us were uparmored and had heavier & stronger engine and airframes as well.... Perhaps it's a combination of all of the above?
