SPA Modeler

Well folks, the family is all out of town as of late Tuesday night of this week, returning sometime Wednesday next week. I have several projects on the go already, but thought I'd try to "finish a kit while I have no distractions" !!! To make sure I have time, I'm building Academy's 1/72 Sopwith Camel, straight out of the box. Don't think (at this point) I'll be attempting any rigging on this one though.

I was originally thinking of painting her up in Greek colours, but then I spotted this decal sheet online:

The sprues... actually have decent exterior detail. The interior is, well, a bench. But to be honest you can't see much of it anyway. I'll be painting it the linen colour, sealing it up, then dropping in a seat cushion & a black panel for the IP.

Dryfit - the good news, it will NOT take up much room in the display area:

Cowling cleaned up. NO, I will not be scratchbuilding an engine for this machine. I think?


But I will be offsetting the control surfaces. Because I'm kinda stupid that way.


Quick progress.

Undersides mostly painted, Humbrol 121 for the natural dope colour.



Also mixed up the lighter base coat for the wood on the propeller and fuselage section. 6parts Humbrol 121 + 5parts Humbrol 61 + 2parts Humbrol 72.





The 72 is "khaki drill", think I may go this route for the "hotly debated British drab colour" I keep reading about. Had been looking at my bottle of Testors Olive Drab, but think that will be too dark, maybe I can pick out some details with that.

Having fun with this little kit, and depending on how I make out with that bat decal, I could be done in a week. (this must be what it feels like, to be fermis... )

After a first hand-brushed coat of paint. For the elusive PC-10 colour, i made a 50-50 mix of Humbrol Khaki Drill and Testors OD.


Instrument panel - at this size it only needs to be a "" suggestion "" , right?


How small?? THIS small:


Agent 003, inspecting my wood panel effects. Not completely happy with it, not fine enough for the scale, but, it's done.


So - for the markings, a little slice & dice with decals from the spares.

The stars are coming from a Hasegawa sheet that came with a Yak-3, Yugoslave IIRC. The white discs are from an Academy sheet.

The bat I'll still need to print, hopefully tonight.

Second coat of paint all around, gloss coat on. Better look at the "wood". I'm REALLY out of practice on that, should have had a practice run.


Scavenged decals for the rudder - still have a touch of yellow outline, there was no way I was going back to trim that any more. I may touch it up with a little paint.

That is really a tiny, tiny kit! But so great looking!
Very nicely made and painted!
