Busy days... Christmas time in the Ore Mountains. ;)

Not much done here so far. Had to find out which font is correct for the tail lettering (I want to cut masks for it). The search took a while, until I found out its called "USN font". Well, at least the tail got its primer. :)

Are the Ore Mountains anywhere near the Misty Mountains?

I had no suitable decals in my stash for the tail lettering. So I mades some masks by printing them by using Photoshop and the correct font (US Navy font). The small numbers are 6mm big, the upper ones 8mm - should be as close as possible. The only thing that went a bit wrong is the yellow of the decvals and its letters (wrong color). Well... Im gonna leave it to the rivet counters. ;)

Hey, that's not bad! Way to go on a difficult process.

Although there are a few companies that make decal sheets of lettering and numbers for various countries and in the main colors. Those are always handy to have.

Had exactly this thought, Stik. My LHS has some in stash. When I bought the kit I saw the box art and thought "Yeah, thats nice!" until the research progress started. Then I stumbled upon the pictures shown above and found it even more interesting.

Bad luck that my LHS really has NAVY nubers in stash (but no letters), but... theyre yellow and black. Of course you can say something like "Oh come on, the kit was only 16 €, so theres some € left for decals!" True! But I liked the challenge of masking them.

;)

BTW - resaerching a correct font for it was tricky. If you ever need it, heres the bare facts for this spcial tail section speaking for 1/48 scale:

Font: "US NAVY font" (too easy, eh?)
Size: 6mm high for the numbers, 8 mm high for the "5Z"

Got me that kit in the VH-34 version, too. Really amazing what you get for below €20.
I follow your build closely!

Small detail for the airfield. Both from AeroBonus, which are great accessories, especially for 1/48 scale.
