1/700 Scharnhorst

Post by Modelcrazy »

While I'm wrapping up the Kirishima I started the classic Tamiya 1/700 Scharnhorst and the Tamiya 1/700 Z37 - 39 to accompany it.
The setting will be Jan 43 during the second attempted breakout from the Baltic to sail to Norway but were detected by British aircraft and were turned back. The Scharnhorst will be going ahead slow while the Z-37 will be passing at 1/3 or so.

I have PE sets for both kits.
I started on the Scharnhorst. Since the deck comes in three sections it took some time to hide the seams. After painting the deck I added dot filters to create some color variations. The deck has the swastika molded in and is meant to have a decal go over it. After some research I found the Scharnhorst had the German flag painted on the bow and at some point on the stern as well. The decal, which is just a swastika inside a white circle is yellowed and falling apart, so I hand painted the flag.

Next I'll work on the superstructure and PE.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting the head off a Hydra, two more take it’s place.

The paintwork of the deck looks very nice, you succeeded very well with the color variation!

Thank you!
I will be getting back on this next week when I get some room. Right now my wife is with me as a caretaker but will be flying back on the 14th.

I completed the kit and completely forgot I had a WIP here. Sorry. I have the completed build in the ships completed build thread.

Well, after looking at the finished build, all is forgiven... :ballbat:

Well... just like before the Channel Dash, this one kind of dropped out of sight...
