...or: “How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Make The Build Even More Complicated”



Our pal Kari spied this kit in my stash a while back when I posted a photo, and he said he’d be interested in seeing what I did with it.

I’ve had building this kit on my mind for a while, and even more now, while I simultaneously work on Gustav I, and repair the damage done to my Von Werra Emil during an accident while putting the finishing touches on it. I dropped it again. It’s always the god damn Emils that get dropped. I didn’t drop the Warhawk. I haven’t dropped the Gustav. I’ve dropped and broken both my Emils.

It’s my favorite plane. It’s also my “Bad Luck” plane. Everybody has a “Bad Luck” plane I bet.

Well, why not build my “Bad Luck” plane in 1/32?

This kit disappointed a fair many people. The clarity of the instructions is a major complaint which I read and hear a lot in written reviews and YouTube videos respectively. I watched a great series of videos which that beard-sporting Rube Goldberg fella did, where he goes in-depth into all the pitfalls and booby traps. I’ve actually watched them several times. Almost as many times as I’ve screened all of Doog’s “Black Basing” videos. And I’ve made copious notes. So I fee good about going into this build.

So good in point of fact, that I’ve decided to further complicate matters and in-effect “Snatch Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory” by factoring the following new variables into the equation:



It arrived in the mail today.

See here, I dislike painting instrument panels. Because I just absolutely suck at it. And I like Eduard’s PE IP’s. Well, I figured since there’s hardly any difference between an F3 and an F4, why not go all-in with the BIG ED they made for Dragon’s F4, for the IP’s and all the other stuff too.

This is going to be a very slow, painfully slow, damn-near excruciatingly painfully slow build.

I grok what you’re saying. 100%. I want my models to look like my style, too. I definitely don’t want to doop anybody else’s.

In terms of the build videos, I watched those in the case of this model because of everything I read about how difficult it was to build because of the instructions. And when it comes to the Black Basing videos, I watched them because I had no experience with airbrushing previously and was hungry to learn techniques. It’s like how I taught myself Perl for my job. I read books, articles, and learned the fundamentals and then went off and started writing programs of my own, with my own flair and style. Like that.

All that said- yeah bro, I feel you. And I’m really glad I fell in with guys like you, and Kari, and Carlos, who are our own kind of modelers. All the way.

Excellent! Another interesting project to watch! My experience with Dragon is very limited but I know that they can produce some very detailed stuff so this one should be fun to work on and watch as well. I prefer reading about builds (I can do this at my own pace) rather than build videos. But Doogs and Will Pattison are both great modelers and I've watched Will's stuff at times. But nothing they say should be taken as gospel. They're just doods with opinions and when they say panel line preshading is for prehistoric donkeys, I just nod and carry on with what I do.

All of these 109 builds is making me itch to start one too!

This’ll be a Kenny X 1/32 Emil, definitely- can’t help that LMFAO and I think you should definitely build one too! Go for it!!! I know I’d love to see it!

I definitely figured I was being somewhat redundant. I appreciate your reply—ditto the fact that you took my ramblings the way I hoped you would. I certainly wanna congratulate you on another promising project.
