'59 El Camino-Closer....11/12

Post by mustang1989 »

This one came out of nowhere but I'll be working on this one for a friend of my son. His name is Jonathan and he received this for a birthday gift a few months ago. He's been over to our house a time or two and has seen the stuff that I build and seemed interested. He's asked me kindly to build this one for him so while the Willy's is in and out of the paint booth and being polished here and there I'll have this to work on.

Here's the kit:

I'll be taking it easy on the mods here but you know I'll be putting my own spin on this thing.

59? I didn’t realize that the El Camino Line was that old. Always one of my favorite cars! Now I have to watch this one.

Thanks Kari. I talked with the lil' guy a couple of days ago just to reassure him that I was , in fact, still going to build it. I think he thought I'd be done with the Willy's in a couple of weeks. :giggles:

Ok fellas. I DO NOT like either engine choice in this kit. I could go with a bone stock 348 "W" motor or a blown Cadillac engine. The 348 is waaaay too primitive and doesn't have any detail. A real let down after that 409 "W" motor that I built for the group build at another forum last year.

The Caddy engine...…….it's a real rarity if I build an engine with a blower on it. I mean look, virtually every single hot rod auto model has a dang blower sticking out of the hood. Just aint feelin' it. That aint to say that I'd never build an auto model with a blower but it just wont happen very often.

So...………..with all that being said, I'll be going with a mild Chevy Small Block 350 from this kit :

It's not all that great of a kit but it's got a decent looking 350 in it.

As you can see there's NO chrome with this engine. I will however be using some Alclad or Molotow on the rocker covers. I do have an open air cleaner in the parts box that I'll use. LOTS of flash on this engine so I've got my work cut out for me.

Got some progress on the engine today. I black based everything and then started applying color to the parts.

I got to looking at the kit wheels and tires and there aint no way I'll be using any of that! I found a spare set of tires from the Revell T/A Challenger kit and a spare set of Rallye wheels from a Camaro kit to help out here:

Yeah...…………..that's more like it.
