SPA Modeler

This is my first time building a kit by this company. I started it at the same time as my Bf 109 but doe to a more varied paint scheme, it has fallen sligtly behind. The kit includes resin and a small PE set. There are 2 complete kits in the box, the second of which i will build as a D-12 when the time comes.

For this kit, i will be building the subject on the box art, an aircraft of the protection flight of JV 44.



The PE for the pit is limited, certainly not as much detail as in some other kits, but its sufficent for such a small cockpit.



And the fuselage went together and the wings on. Afraid i forgot to get pics of the underside. It does have a nice resin wheel well. This made the fit of the wing tops and bottoms tricky, needed some sanding, but it got there. There are no location tabs, so i had to be careful lining everything up.



Then with the final parts added, time for some primer and painting. It was primed and the RLM 76 blue added at the same time as the 109. But of course i had some more colours to add.

The top was done with RLM 82/83.



On the underside, i did over all white, then used a set of P masks before adding the red. The mask strips came in 4 sizes, but you have to work out for yourself which one to use. After looking at a couple of pics, i went for the smallest ones, 1mm.



There are 8 sets of markings for this, but 2 of those are for the same aircraft. Before it was Red 4, this aircraft was marked as White 58. This was over sprayed with RLM 76 but still slightly visible under the new markings. So i added those decals, over sprayed with blue then did the mottling. The marking is only just visible on the left side. You can just make out the chevron beind the wing.



Its less visible on the right and does not show at all on the photo.



Then the rest of the decals are added. The decals are numbered on the instructions but not on the decal sheet. So a few of them you have to guess which ones to use.









I have given it a coat of clear gloss, and i started on some light flory washes last night..

Great paint work Bish! I find it odd that the company adds a resin wheel well but it's not the right type. The Dora was open in the middle and the rear of the engine stuck out into the wheel well.

I do like these red and white striped birds Martin. Very good work as you always seem to do in such a small scale. Lookin' good bud.

Floki, maybe its just a scal;e thing. I have done the 72nd Academy kit with an Aires resin wheel well and i think that was the same as this. I don't worry to much as it will be attached to a base and seeing as this was their very first release and not a re-box, it is odd.

I also wrapped this one up last night. It was weathered with a flory wash and some exhaist stains. For the guns i used resin MG 151 barrels for the inner weapons and some bras tube for the outer 30mm MK 108's.



The rubber mat used to protect the surface of the wing is a PE part from Airmodel.







I finished it off by attaching it to the base and adding a couple of altered Airfix figures and the oil drum is also from Airmodel.











I really liked this kit. I will lok forward to building the other one and hopefully picking up their D-13 at some point.
