As it is really "in" to build a P-51D in scale 1:48, I will also contribute with my build.

As a matter of fact, I am building both Airfix and Eduards P-51D:s, however focusing first on the Airfix kit.

Despite the fact that Eduard is a better kit, both in very crispy detailing and "engineering", but Airfix is still a more fun kit to build. Might be in my case the fact, that I am fond of the soft plastic Airfix uses.

But first a brief comparision between Airfix and Eduard. Quite visible sink marks on the Airfix kit that need some filling action.

And same after some filling sink marks + paintwork

But lets continue with Airfix now:
The decal comforted extremely well on the instrument panel. I used a lot Tamiyas Mark Fit decal setting as the decal seemed so thick. Which eventually was not the case.

My favorite part of a build, the cockpit. Bruce already shared this picture in his thread (many thanks, appreciated my friend!)

Testfitting, some sanding needed inside the fuselage, as there is pretty much stuff that needs to be squeezed inside it
But all in all, good fit!
Image

Actually, what was supposed to be "just" a testfitting became the first milestone.. While realising that the testfit was perfect, I just kept everything tightly together and started to add liquid cement. Fuselage halves are mated, finally!

Next steps are wings, but first some detail work before next steps..

Let's see what next!

Good to see this on here Kari and glad to hear you're having better luck than me.

:hmm: I need to get some of those Tamiya Clears.

Join the Mustang fun! It's not on my list of fave aircraft so we'll have at least one modeler doing a non-Mustang build! :giggles:

Absolutely John!
I have always had this love-hate relationsship with the Mustang. But after concretely starting this build (practically forcing myself, thanks to Stuarts struggling with the kit), it is now definitely more love than hate! :-)

Looking for a suitable subject for this kit, I ordered this.

So I want and will build a RAF version, precisely what is still under consideration, but definitely one of the camo versions!

Off to a great start Kari! It's going to be nice to see the side by side of these along the way

Kari! So nice to see a comparison between Airfix and Hasegawa Mustang kits. I will be following this sine I’ve been on the fence in deciding which kit along with the Tamiya brand to build a couple Blue Noser Mustangs.

Thanks guys for the nice comments!

The last thing I did last night, was to paint the formation lights that are located under the right wing, with Tamiyas Clear Red, Green and Yellow.

Image

And the first thing I did this Saturday morning, was to finalise the right wing, including the ready formation lights

Image

The fit of the major wing parts was excellent! So excellent, that I will not need any bigger work with the seam in the front. The liquid cement did the job, some light sanding was the only thing I had to do. Wonderful!

So now starts the work to add, besides the wing also the horizontal stabilisers and rudder to the fuselage.

Here a good comparision picture of the rudder, on the left Airifx and on the right Eduard.

And a closeup

Back to the bench!
