MV Colombo Express 1/700 Revell Germany

Post by LyleW »

This won't be in progress for a bit. Been fighting with the seat/interior tub on the '57. I fully blame Tim Nelson at Model Paint Solutions for this trip into insanity. His model and build log did it. Plain and simple. I don't see this being that good...but I hope to do it justice.

Here she is:

Image

There are 226 parts. Detail looks pretty good, What I've looked over doesn't have a lot of flash.

Hull is two piece and she is 47.9 cm or 18.85 in in length:

Image

All the container "blocks" must be assembled and there are several....each row across the beam of the vessel is a separate block. And they go in a specific spot.

Part of the deck:

Pieces of the accomodation block

fore deck (forecastle?)

And, a spiffy base

Image

Now, for the inssanity part....seriousliy. Okay, I know 1/700 is small scale unless you are a 1000' feet long, but....goodness. And there are 60 crew on this printer block. I think these are 3-D printed. Not sre what I was thinking.(See Modelcrazy for help) As Tim Nelson said, a few set around does add some better sense of scale. We'll see.

Then, there had to be railings....huh?

You should read his build log. I am still re-reading again and again to grasp fully what he did on the containers. I want to try to duplicate that. The decals are included and they are all for Hapag-Lloyd containers. All of them. With the Silhouette cutter, making the masks should not be extremely difficult, but tedious...and mind-numbing. Sort of like a Rubic's Cube.

Instructions are typical of the RoG stuff these days.

Yeah, way over my head. But, it is only sanity! Highly overrated.

MV Colombo Express - Had to scratch the itch

Post by LyleW »

At almost 19" long, . . she is a big lady even in this scale.

Hull went together almost perfectly. No warping, No gaps..it just fit.

Looking good, Lyle. But seeing the size of the figures on top of spray can nozzle makes me admit myself to the psych ward had I wanted those.

Thanks, Tom.

I must admit, I really thought they would be a smidge bigger. Here is one lying on the foredeck - beween the two winches. I think I lost it trying to move it to a container.......I wonder if 60 will be enough figures. How in the heck do you paint something like this? Yeah, I know...with a really small brush.

Deck is on, fit like a glove.

I got a set of pre-painted PE figures for my Titanic... and they sit in the box.
Looks like a pretty trouble free build so far Lyle. Really like all the detail.
Thanks,
John

This little lady is:

was launched in 2005, she was considered the largest container ship...for a year or so,
Almost 1,100 feet long
Beam of 140 ft
Diesel powered, some 93,500 hp
Can do 25 knots
Can carry 8,749 TEU containers (twenty foot equivalency units)
Can carry 730 reefers TEU

But, not without mishap
