Golden Era of Aviation Racers

Post by LyleW »

I seem to enjoy, or migrate to, self-inflicted pain. I do love these 30s - 40s racers. Man they are sleek, beautiful and could be deadly, too. I've done (okay, i guess) two, the Gee Bee and a Laird-Turner Meteor.

Feeling cocky, I got these. They are 1/48 scale but tiny...maybe 6" in length.

I haven't started them, and have no plans to do so for a bit (right...) but have been puzzling over how to mask the Travel Air Mystery ship. I probably spend more time on fussing with it trying to save a bit of time than it would take to actually just do it. The Silhouette cutter doesn't trace very well on a scan of the wing part. I painted the wing white and then applied a black panel line wash to highlight the scribing they provided for the markings. I was able to cut it out with a new #11 blade.

But, I'm a still fiddling around, so more later.

Looks very sharply done!

And you have Lyle a really nice collection there of those racers.

Especially the Curtiss Racer is really a beauty !!

Oh I’m there with you on loving those Hawk/Testors racer kits. There is indeed just something about those planes. :hmm:

Thank guys.

That was. Such a special time in aviation history, never to be repeated.

I may have a scan that I can cut with rhe Sihlouette.... I hope. Then I can reproduce it for the other three wing panels.

Now you're talkin'! I love those Golden Age racers too!

But, I've only finished one. Well, my Supermarine S6 is 90% done and has sat untouched for many years...hmmm...maybe tie to gig her out of the bottom shelf.

Hey, there's the S6B sitting alone on the bottom right:

Lyle!

Happy Father’s Day and congratulations on those kits. Those are going to be spectacular. I really feel the era and these aircraft are under-represented in scale model building circles. Without Testors (Hawk) and Lindberg kits, there really is not very much out there. One exception is a relatively new Gee Bee designed by Dora.

Lyle, I can make a good cutting file for your Silhouette. Just wait a few days and I will get it to you. I have all those kits, at least I have all the ones I have heard of.

Very nice collection of racers Lyle! So cool! I'll definitely follow along with all your work on these. I did the little Curtis Racer on floats in 1/72 scale some time back.It was a blast!
