Dragon 1/200 scale B-52G Stratofortress

Post by BlackSheep214 »

I've been working on this ol' Cold War era bomber off and on for the last 3 weeks between my other builds.
This kit had decals belonging to Griffiss AFB in nearby Rome, N.Y.
I've grown to hearing & seeing them flying overhead during my youth years right up til the BRAC base closure in the esrly 90's.
It's a nice kit but the decals were horrible. They would not slide off the backing paper even in hot water. I literally had to carefully pull them off and apply them to the kit. I'm guessing maybe it's the she of the decals. Thankfully, none did tear as I pulled them off the backing paper.

She is painted using Euro 1 Grey with Green Drab topside while the belly side is Euro 1 Grey and Gunship Grey.

That looks pretty sharp Tom! :shoutout: I remember the 1/72 B-52 kit being pretty massive :hmm: how big is this 1/200 kit when finished?

Nice job Tom. I've got that one and started it as part of a B-52 GB but got frustrated. She's my paint mule now - may finish it someday.
Thanks,
John

Wing tip to wingtip is about 11 inches. Nose to tail - 9 1/2 inches.

I masked the canopy windows using poster tack. Yeah... they're stupid tiny.

Very nice looking build! Still a large kit for 1/200

Yeah... pretty typical for a Cold War era bomber. They weren't that bad to assemble. Even when I did the old 1/72 scale Monogram B-52 Stratofortress kit as a kid.

I couldn't get the wings to sag properly for the wingtip landing gears on this one. When I glued the wings, I eyeballed it as best I could thinking both sides would touch the ground evenly. Oh well.

This won't be the only B-52 kit with Griffiss decals I'll build. I want to do the H version.

I've watched them land at airshows in the past but never like that. Most likely because of crosswinds upon approach and landing. It's quite a sight to watch them take off and come in to land.
