Italeri 1/48 EA-18G Growler

Post by Medicman71 »

So I realized that I hadn't added this build here. I started this back in the middle of November. My wife is part of a big art fest and I usually bring a kit to work on as we're at the studio ALL day. So I thought I'd bring this since I had the Eduard PE (interior and exterior). Here's the kit box.

Being a big fan of all things Hornet/Super Hornet/Growler, I almost immediately found some mistakes. First the "pizza box" Combined Interrogator/Transponder is not there. I'll have to add this with some plastic shaped to fit. Also Growlers don't have guns and the kit still has it replicated. The exhaust ports will have to be filled in. There's also supposed to be two antennas on either side of the nose right behind the radome. I'll figure out how to add those.

Next two mistakes. On the bottom of the nose between the big antenna and the nose gear bays are more exhaust for the gun, which shouldn't be there. Those will be filled in as well. Also there's no refueling probe door. I'll try and scribe that in.......maybe.

On the spine of the jet, there's another antenna for the EWS. The kit gives you this blob of a part that really doesn't fit. I got it in the spot it's supposed to be. It'll need to be fared in better. I also added the ECS vents to the upper back fuselage.

I had the Eduard interior PE and absolutely NONE of it fit. Not even close. The kit has zero raised detail in the cockpit so I had to go with the crappy looking decals.

Great details Mike. Looks like you've got a good reference. You would think the bumps, blisters and antennae would be all included being a growler and all. Was the eduard set for the Italeri kit? Odd that none of it fit.
Thanks,
John

That’s Italeri for ya. I did a Viper kit by Italeri and the belly tank looked too big after I installed it. I won’t buy another Italeri kit after that. Too many discrepancies in their kits.

Annoying about the cockpit but I suspect those decals will look good under the canopy.

Great to see a new project on the go!
