Decal Feedback

Post by Stikpusher »

Keyday’s P-61 thread got me to thinking about this subject. Today there are a multitude of aftermarket decal brands available. Some have good reputations, some do not. What are your own actual experiences with different brands? Not what you’ve heard or read, but firsthand experiences? Please name the brand and the pros and/or cons those that you have used?

I like Syhart and Model Maker since I've used a couple sets already.

Printscale
I used this sheet: https://printscale.org/product_449.html
Pro's
  • Often cover subjects not seen before
Cons:
  • Print quality seemed like it could have been better; however, not really noticeable at normal viewing distance
  • Very thin and difficult to work with -- can easily ruin a decal if you are not careful.
  • The general aircraft stenciling sheet seemed to come from a different manufacturer, carrier film thicker and glossy sheen.

Draw decals are pretty nice. They make a lot for commercial aircraft, fire fighters & some military

They are digital silk and extremely thin. Perfect registration and react well to setting solutions. They are a continuous film medium so careful trimming is required.

Propagteam and most Roden decals give me fits.

It's VERY simple. If it says "Made By Cartograph", it's going to be good.

I agree with Mike: Cartograph is my go-to for aftermarket decals; I've almost never had any issues with them.

Caracal is another good one. I've used a couple sheets from them. Eagle Strike, used them several times. I'm sure there are others, but I can't remember at the moment. I would have to dig through my stash of leftovers.

Afterburner (no longer around), Fightertown, Furrball, Caracal, Bullseye and Flying Leatherneck are all great decal companies that do more modern aircraft.
