Scratchbuilding a Barrage Balloon....

Post by BlackSheep214 »

What would MacGuyver do?

I started brainstorming in making own barrage balloon using 2 small 8 oz water bottles. Sawed off cap & neck, sawed to first notch on bottle, sanded and glued to bottom of second bottle. Used bottle cap for front of balloon. Will need to shape it using some sort of putty of sort.

Need to figure out how to taper and make fins for the tail.end.

Papier-mache? Over the bottles?

An excellent idea Tom, looking forward to seeing where this goes!

Never done paper mache before but it’s a thought. I wouldn’t know what to get or go about the process of doing paper mache.

That is a pretty awesome idea. Papier mace is easy: 50-550 mix of water and white glue and some paper strips. Dip the paper in the glue mix, wick off the excess, then place it on the bottles. Cover until you have the shape you want. Use a surface filler to smooth things out and then prime and paint.

Still not sure about the fins though.

I’ve decided to forego building a barrage balloon…. for now.
