Diorama try-outs

I realized I have not really made any testing how to build a diorama, even less a base. Therefore I just decided to make something with any stuff I have already available.. In other words some modelling clay and this yellow (!) gravel look a like stuff..

Image

So I started first a base, a rather thin layer of clay and some of the gravel. Also trying to simulate some stone street..

Image

.. adding more of the gravel, adding some track ruts and reshape the "ground"

Image

After the clay was dried, I first added a layer diluted white glue, to secure the gravel and then I airbrushed a layer of black primer on everything:

Some painting here and there:

Drybrushing the stones with light grey

Weathering with a number of different pigments

And a layer of pigment fixer

Image

And voila, here is the "end product" of the try-out session. I had planned to fill the small hole with AK's "Still water", but decided to leave that to another test session.

Must say, has been really an interesting test and gives a lot of confidence for me, to start the Cromwell & Staghound diorama soon.

Testing will continue, stay tuned!

Very nice! I need more practice on making bases and diorama scenes.

That looks good. Years ago in my early teens, I used to find small gravel stones in my backyard, the street whereI lived, the driveway, wherever. Washed them then glue them on my diorama. I guess as a kid, I took the cheap freebie way out. :giggles:

Seriously though. Great stuff!

Kitty litter (preferably clean) is also good for dioramas as used in this 1/35 vignette
