KP 1/72 Grob Astir CS-77 Jeans

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

With my last name being Grob, I feel obligated to build them: the Grob Astir from KP. It's not a top-tier kit; it's definitely a short run with a lot of flash. But because it's a simple aircraft, the kit isn't too difficult to build. This is my second one, and I have a few more in the stash, in addition to some more exotic resin kits of other Grob aircraft.

Anyway, the Astir is a glider used by various organizations, including the Belgian Air Cadets. I'm going to build the PL-74 version of the Air Cadets. The "Jeans" variant has fixed landing gear. There's also another version with retractable gear.
There are many different color possibilities for the seat and harnesses. Seat cushions are regularly replaced, so it's difficult to say what is definitively correct. I went with this color scheme. The harnesses were made using Tamiya tape.
The next step is the wings, and then the build will already be nearly complete.

Borg, that is one sleek start! Of course you must build them!

Very nice indeed Borg - I do like those Sailplanes, such lovely looking aircraft.

The wings are attached. A known issue with this kit is that the left wing is often crooked, so it needed extra attention. By taping it to a steel ruler, everything should be perfectly straight and symmetrical.

Nice! Not too often we find a sailplane kit built up.

As discussed cockpit canopy fit poorly, so I had to do quite a bit of filling and sanding there.
Next, I applied the grey primer, did some more extra filling and sanding, and then applied the white primer. Everything is going well, except for that cockpit canopy.
