Zvesda 1/72 Tupolev I-4

I am going to build the Zvesda Tupolev I-4 for this group build.
This is not an Zvesda mould, it has been released by several companies such as Berkut and Encore (in John’s stash) and is originally from Nakotne. With this kit you can build the prototype ANT-5, I-4 early production and it has the short wings for the I-4Z. However, the engine covers aren’t accurate for a late production version (like the one on the box…). Furthermore, for production versions spoked wheels would be accurate.

I have build the ANT-5 version before and had a great time doing so. Interestingly that was moulded in soft grey plastic, this one is in harder green plastic. It just goes to show you cannot even rely on reviews and previous experience.

Some versions had spoked wheels! What a fantastic subject. Interesting kit history as well; thanks so much for the inclusion. Also, I agree with you that different types of plastic used in the same molds generates a complete different experience. One general rule I try for is to balance the initial release of the kit - usually sharpest details - with the rigidity of the plastic.

Yes, the I-4 is an interesting plane. I think the picture that you posted shows a version with recoilless rifles. They also had rockets. The soviets where experimenting a lot then.

This kit is relatively simple as long as you take care with test fitting and adjusting. Just treat it as a short run.
I added one of the resin seats I made for my Polikarpov’s to add some more detail. In this time frame the soviets used aluminium dope as an interior colour so the inside is aluminium. Fit was good as long as you cut off the positioning tabs that the kit has.

I remember your resin replacement well, Remco! Very nice to see the overhead views of its placement! The molding of the kit looks very good. As with the Eduard which I’m also treating as a short run design, cutting the locator tabs on the fuselage allows you to fit the halves very closely and evenly! Wonderful work so far!

What a funky liking design! Soviet design bureaus sure had unique style in their product lines. And this one looks to be something of a bridge between their biplane and monoplane types. Very nice subject choice and start!
