As we progress with any skill, there's often a point where we have a sudden leap in understanding or ability. Often this is triggered by a new tool or (in our cases) a new kit, or a new technique that somebody has shown us.
Its always so satisfying to have that little Eureka!! Moment.
For me I think the biggest jump in skill was moving from brush painting to airbrushing, since then I've added little things to my took kit, particularly patience (sand, fill, sand, fill, sand, multiple passes makes all the difference)
Im curious to know what your biggest eureka moment was. And what triggered it.

Definitely moving from rattle cans to airbrushing for me. What else…. I had my grandfather’s old Dremel tool and later upgraded to a newer model. jkim liked to use Union David reciprocal sander and that’s a huge game changer for me. Got it for Christmas- actually Christmas Eve Day it arrived from Taiwan via slow boat. Well worth the wait and definitely worth the $99.

I can’t honestly call anything a serious game changer. New tools over time have allowed for new techniques, that also involve new learning curves. All have been a slow evolution rather than a rapid evolution. Some have been bigger evolutionary steps, others have been baby steps.

I was relatively young ( 20 something ) and I went to an IPMS San Diego contest.... I'd never seen anything like that. Took my another 20-30 years to develop skills but that definitely made me want to build like those guys.

Same - I can't think of anything that was an actual game-changer. Just a slow learning of the craft, tools and techniques over the years to the stage where I'm happy with the models I'm building. If I had to pick something as a 'game-changer', it was the knowledge of the tools and techniques that actually worked for me - and the development of how I like to build models.

For me, it was the same moving from brush painting to airbrushing.

That 'eureka' moment happened more than 13 years ago. I was working on Hasegawa's Bf-109 in 1:48 scale and had just bought a cheap airbrush set. That moment when you pressed the trigger and—jeez—it was so easy, so nice, and the results were great... everything!

The 109 was airbrushed outdoors (!), but for the next project, I quickly made a paint booth in the cellar. Can anyone identify the aircraft in the picture? The paint booth being still in mint condition..

For me it was attending my first AMPS Nationals and seeing all the amazing work there as I was just starting out in armor. I made some great friends who were super helpful, and started judging models which gave me loads of tips on things to avoid and on how to fix mistakes...my skill set really grew from all that instead of just trying to solo my way through it.
