MEET MARK DELIDUKA, MASTER BUILDER
I had the good fortune to interview Mark and share his story on the occasion of his week long celebration of 1,000 completed military models—called “Mark Deliduka: The 1,000 Model Experience,” exhibited locally in Southern California.
What’s the primary focus of “The 1,000 Model Experience” for you?
The primary focus of this model experience was to share my accomplishment with as many people as possible who are interested in this hobby in general and vehicles in particular. It isn't every day that you get to view 1000 completed models all in one place. A secondary bonus was being able to see everything again in person; something I can't do every day since these all stay packed in tubs due to a lack of space to display them. Anyone wanna buy me a loft? LOL!
Why did you choose 1/72 as the scale?
In my distant youth, my mother realized 1/48 scale aircraft were too much for a six year old and she 'dropped' me down to 1/72 scale aircraft. They were easier to build with fewer parts and easier for a kid like me. Later, I had a friend who built 1/72 scale aircraft exclusively. He was the friend who had taught me how to paint and detail my models. I asked him the same thing, "why 1/72 scale only?". He replied that he loved having everything on a consistent scale so he could see the relative size of everything against each other piece. I saw what he meant, especially after I built a 1/35th scale tank someone had gifted me and placed it next to my 1/72 scale aircraft. The result was jarring to me at best. Therefore, I also committed to sticking with the 1/72 scale exclusively. Once I found out there were armor models out there in 1/72 scale I continued even more firmly to build vehicles in 1/72 scale as well since I liked comparing them to my aircraft as well. To this day, I also try hard to stick to 1/72 scale in my real space and sci-fi models.
What paints and glues did you use?
On at least 80% of these vehicles, I used Testor's orange tube glue and Testor's paints; first the square bottles and later Model Master colors when I learned about them. It wasn't until much later that I discovered and started using Tamiya Extra Thin and Humbrol, Vallejo and AK acrylics.
What can you tell me about yourself and what would you like to share with the community of model builders?
Being known as the "1/72 scale guy" has garnered me a bit of a reputation, and as a rather prolific modeler, I have been able to show a great number of my models at shows and contests; setting records at several IPMS National conventions with entries and display sizes.
If you met someone interested in building models but has no experience, what advice would you give?
Start slow and easy with a rather simple model and practice the basics of assembly and painting. Later as confidence builds, start experimenting with more advanced techniques. Do not expect your first models to be contest-worthy models, that takes time and practice. However, don't let that discourage you in any way, rather let it encourage you to continue to practice and improve to get to that level you're striving for.
Are there any hobby shops or stores in the area you would recommend as a source for supplies?
Fortunately, here in Southern California we have a good number of excellent Hobby Shops—Brookhurst Hobbies in Garden Grove, Pegasus Hobbies out in the inland Empire, Tony's Hobbies and Toys in Baldwin Park, Burbank House of Hobbies in Burbank.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition for putting together the show?
First and Foremost, Harmon Ward, facilities manager of the St. Crispin's Irregulars Hobby Hall who allowed me five days to keep this collection up and on display so that anyone could come and see it. Second, David Selby for his work filming, editing and posting all the promotional videos leading up to this event and for subsequent live streams posted during the event. Third, Frank Perkins for additional promotion and exposure through his vlog online. I also can credit all my friends at the local IPMS Orange County club and for the local SoCal AMPS club for all their support, assistance, inspiration and advice over the years. Finally, all my friends on the various online forums I frequent, some of whom I've met in person who've supported me and inspired me along the way.
Where are you going from here? What's next? A sequel?
Right now, I'm going to work on a good list of ship models and aircraft models that I've been wanting to build for awhile and had on hold while I built to my milestone. I'll start a few more vehicles soon too, but I do need to get rid of some large boxes and other busted up ones in my stash. Yes, there will be a sequel provided God gives me enough time, health and resources. Should He do so, I'm hoping for another display of 1200 small scale vehicles. Stay tuned!
