I did! One of the late marks Carlos mentioned. Honestly, I am sold on Airfix´s recent kits. Their late mark Spitfire already look great, as do the new one. Got the FR Mk.XIV here in the line waiting.

Todays program.. some weathering of the wheel wells, using basic ingredients this time.

First some dry-brushing of Tamiya X-11, then oilwashes.
Applies for both Spits.

But first the big brother

Beautiful! Why is the wheel well interior green? I thought the base coat of every Spitfire was aluminium over primer.

Here’s an unrestored example/silver paint:

I thought the silver base was then oversprayed with whatever the wing color was... and the section surrounding the landing gear strut was left aluminium until Mk 22 or thereabouts that painting the wheel well became standard?

Hi Bruce,

IIRC most spitfire were primed and then painted with whatever colour they were going to be. Not sure if they were painted silver first. But I think it varied a lot between aircraft and where it was made.

Later post war aircraft were painted High Speed Silver - which was Silver dope.

Cheers.

I usually paint my wheel wells on RAF Aircraft the same as the surrounding area. Except for early War aircraft, those I paint in aluminum as was the norm at that time.
