Did you use the decals provided in the box ? Zvezda is (was ?) notorious for the poor quality of the decals but I read somewhere that they were improved with their Pe-2

As mentioned by Manny I also use condoms, and also rubber boots when raining. Except than that, I also use a dust mask when sanding plastic, resin, putty or CA -that's really nasty stuff. I paint with acrylics but I always use a respirator, ok solvents are not as bad as with enamels, but some pigmen...

You are doing a great job on that Zip-4 !
To avoid this PITA with old decals, you can use Micro liquid decal film. I never used it but it should do the trick.
