1/48 Great Wall FW 189 A-2 "Uhu" (Owl)

Post by lawdog114 »

Here's my latest project which was a commission build, Great Wall's recent FW 189 Uhu. I didn't know much about the Uhu until I started this project. I learned it was the eye of the Luftwaffe and was extremely maueverable, which made it hard to shoot down. This one is a bomber/recon version from the Russian front in 1943, as apparently they served primarily in that theater.

Other than a color Edurd PE set in the pit, its out of the box. It did fight me at times, particularly with wing root gaps, but you'll have that I guess. Also, they make you install the landing gears when you close the booms, making painting a choir. Not a deal breaker but certainly annoying. The glass is excellent and fits great (the buyer want them all close, otherwise I would have opened them). I used Eduard masks here and they are well woth it. The decals are crap so I sourced most of them from an old Bf 110 sheet. I did salvage the kit specific ones...barely. The pilot came with the kit but detail was soft, so I spruced him up with a masking tape chute harness.

Next up is their P-61. I can't wait to dig in to that one...

Thanks for looking....Joe

Cool! That's something a bit out of your comfort zone, right?
The paintjob with the streaking all over the wings is clearly your handwriting and suits the aircraft very well. I bet painting the glasshouse was a PITA, but you managed it bravely. The silver color on the cross hairs of the rear MG is a bit too prominent if I dare say. They pop out quite strongly.

I'm sure your client will be more than happy. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great build of a challenging kit. Nicely done. Pilot is a very nice touch.

Wouh, not "only" looking, but admiring a well done project.
So crispy clean paintwork of the glasshouse canopy! Would be nice to see the masking you did. The result it's just perfect!

Only now I see the very special tail-wheel this Fw 189 has, very special solution!

I thought the same thing...they came in brass so I sprayed them silver. Gonna go back with some black then dry brush them hopefully for a better effect.

Thanks for the kind words all...
