One of my favorite parts of a build is right after the base coat of paint on the main body from here you can really start to see how the build is going to look in the end and I've reached that stage with this one.
First to mention I painted the entire half track with AK Real Colors RAL7028 Dark Yellow.
Now remember when I said I decided not use hairspray to chip the interior because I was afraid of reactivating it later, well this is why.
This is the second time trying this technique for a very distressed white wash. My first was on this Tamiya Styer Type 1500

I did this about six or seven years ago.
To start I loaded my airbrush with Tamiya XF-2 Flat White mixed 1/1 with Tamiya thinner.
Then I took the model and dunked it into a bowl of water (may not want to use your wifes good tupperware for this, don't ask how I know.)

Let that drip for a few seconds then just spray a fast coat of the white onto the entire surface where you want the white wash, do this as fast as you can then dunk the model back into the bowl again.
This is what she looked like after the first layer.

From here start working panel by panel spraying some white on one panel dunking it then using a old toothbrush to start scrubbing on the paint. After about a hour this is what I was left with.


I'll go back with some of the RAL7028 and add some more chips and scratches.
I think this technique works better on a dark grey base then this dark yellow but I'm still happy at where it is at.
I'm going to let this dry out for the day. Tomorrow I'm going to the IPMS Roscoe Turner show in Indianapolis hope to pick up another Dragon 251 I really do enjoy building them.

Whoa! I will have more to write about how effective this approach is, but I wanna step back and take notes as well. Congratulations! My question is... how does the water layer work? Does that act like an interference layer for the paint in addition to making it pliable with the toothbrush???

Yes it keeps the paint from adhering to the surface and when dunked back into the water it comes off in random patterns. I forgot to mention I put down a acrylic gloss coat over the dark yellow before adding the white wash. One to protect the paint but it also gives a slick surface to help remove the white paint. When you dunk the model into the water after adding a layer of white you can watch it detach and float off the surface it's really pretty neat to watch.

Thank you guys, I really like that photo of them scrubbing the white wash off. Looking at the guys pants I think it's probably been colorized but I'm no expert. I'm at the show right now lots of great models in the contest and I did pick up another Dragon 251 kit, judging just started now to sit and wait for that to be done.
