Carlos, According to the profile description I am using, putty was used on the upper wings; and in the particular case should be visible. After studying what would be visible I removed the majority of paneling lines, and decided to add back the visible putty last. In this situation it is easier for me to obscure the putty line with light gray washes afterwards. Again according to the profile which I am “putting” or “putty-ing” my faith in for decisions, the color would be sorta brick reddish in this case.

Bruce, my comment on the wings and putty on panel lines was not in regards to your build as a critique. Rather, it was seeing something new for the first time. An “ah ha!” moment of noticing that small detail. Now I am curious if that is only a production technique used on all of the late war 109s, only used on a select few, or if it appeared earlier in the family.

My apologies. It was a long night of troubling dreams. I dreamt I was emergency bailing out my bathroom sink. The most comprehensive look at the development and characteristics of the 109 fails to mention using putty. There was however a major wing design (rounded tips) between E and F series. Perhaps at this point putty was used to further reduce drag.

I've never heard of putty of being used on the Bf109 during construction. Doesn't mean it never happened but none of my references mention it that I am aware of. Towards the end of the war, the opposite was happening where painting became so minimalized that paint stopped being used on major areas such as the bottom of the wings.

From what I know, putty WAS often used in the field, usually on areas of repair and I think that is what is showing up on the photos of Bruce's 265. Putty applied over the factory camo in areas of recent repair.
