It felt good to get Pips’ Emil back on the bench. And I am pleased to say that I feel much better about this field-applied camouflage modification.

I completely abandoned the scheme in the “suggestions” booklet. I haven’t been able to find any photographs that give a clear look at the upper wing surfaces of Pips machine. I can only guess what he and the Luftwaffe did. The best reference I have is included in this post, in which you cat least can see the eclectic-looking squiggle on the starboard wing. SO, I decided that if I can at least execute that convincingly, then it’ll be okay. I fashioned masks piece by piece out of scrap masking tape stuck to my hobby mat, the more jagged and ragged and fucked-up the edges, the better. Masked the areas with a “less is more” philosophy, then thinned the absolute crap out of
Some RLM 02 and sprayed in very soft, light coats, and then blended them just a bit.

I’m happy with this. This gives me joy.

Mottling on the fuselage is next.

Awesome! Glad you decided to give it another go. The 02 came out very well and the color modulation is fantastic. I'm excited to see the fuselage mottling.

Thank you Floki!!!

I went back and shot just a bit more 02 at it, to bulk up a few sections and break up the splinter scheme a bit more, add a bit more balance, and make it look a bit more, uh- “German”. Very satisfied with this right here:

Okay, now I really am calling that bit “done” LOL

And thanks to all you guys again for sticking with me and encouraging me. This went from an epic disaster to what I feel is one of the best finishes I’ve put on a model, to-date. And you all were a big part of that. Thank you for encouraging me and for your kind words.

X!

I read everything so I am now caught up. Totally stoked. Congratulations on those mighty wings. Now I am going to suggest a dirt cheap technique for the fuselage sides... I would use a friskette mask - punch holes with a pin and a pencil point in a thin sheet of cardboard or thick sheet of paper then hold this away from the surface to be painted and spray though it. I found out that directional exhaust sprays (that fan out) look best when doing this, and I believe you could use this to create the mottling sections where there are points of color. Alternately you could use a brush and do a pointillism piece. I actually would do the brush myself but I think your mastery of all things air brushy lends itself to the use of a friskette. You should think of friskettes as multiples - you make several for each side and go in a sectional approach. Anyway I’m not saying you should hell no! I’m not thinking that way at all but I am thinking you could try it.

Also also also

Caveat Emperor! Try it on something else first. You may hate the idea but I gotta tell ya it does make interesting surface effects when angle the top of your air brush.

Sometimes it helps to walk away from a build for a fresh look at it another day. The finish of this is shear perfection, congrats on prevailing!

My man Black Sheep-

Thank you for the link! That is a very interesting technique. I’d love to see Stuart tackle that. The man is a wiz with a brush. He makes magic happen. Me? I’ve got a lot of scrap plastic around here that I could practice on, so I’m going to give this a whirl and see what happens.

Bruce-

Sometimes it’s as is you’re reading my mind. To be honest, I’ve been considering *both* of those ideas. You know I freehanded the mottling on Galland’s Emil, with my airbrush. That scheme though was much more simplistic. This scheme involves several layers of colors and I think the friskette idea is probably the best way to re-create it. And look here, I tried freehanding the RLM 02 overspray and totally botched it both times. So what’d I end up doing? I masked it. And I used bits of old, torn up tape to do it... and I’m doing so I found that I like building up the scheme *BEFORE* committing to paint. And boy was that hella-good practice for my forthcoming Spitfire. I genuinely like the idea of measuring off the fuselage areas, then building mask sections for each area, and then carving out where I want the mottling to be. I like that. I can see it all happen before I do it. I like that security. So I’m thinking I’ll go that route although like I said above, I’m gonna practice that brush mottling technique too, because there’s definitely areas on this where that might be just the ticket. So thank you!!

Mr. Handiabled-

Thank you sir! I appreciate that and you know what? I’m never gonna smash a model I don’t like again. Nope. If I don’t like the paint I’ve done, I’m gonna carefully wipe it out, set the model down and work on one of the others in the rotation for a while, and come back with fresh eyes indeed. Nothing beats the feeling of accomplishment I got from finally nailing it. Oh man! So yessir! Yes indeed you are correct- just set it down for only a little while, and come back with fresh eyes and try it again.

Good morning fellas!

I wanted to swing by and talk shop a little but this morning because a lot has coalesced in my mind which I wanted to share, and, And, AND!!! I have a new addition to the rotation on the old workbench which I wanted to show off!

What is it...?

A jet?

A Huey?

A Stuka?

Yet another Emil?

An aircraft carrier?

NOPE!

Image

Image

It’s a.... Skate deck? A skate deck? A SKATE DECK!!!???

Yes! It arrived this morning! The good folks at Beer City Skateboards & Records shipped it out to me via Federal Express. I ordered it Wednesday. You cannot beat their service. I wish they sold paints and model kits.

And this isn’t off the mark. Speaking technically- I’m building this setup. I’ll be picking out and installing the trucks of my choosing, shock pads, bearings, and wheels, and I’ll be putting the grip tape on there myself as well (and that’s where this thing is going to get really interesting, so more on the grip tape later).

I always had a skateboard when I was a kid. It was standard-issue. Part of the equipment along with a pocket knife and a Zippo lighter and if you were into bicycles too- either a Mongoose, Haro, GT, or a Dyno. BMX or Freestyle, didn’t matter. Anyway, I’m always driving down to Little Veron’s, the corner market down the road from my house, and that’s silly. Why not skate there? Why not skate on my lunch breaks if I’m not wrapped up with a model (which believe it or not is the case sometimes)? Skating is fun. Now, I was never good at doing tricks, and I would imagine that at 41 years old, after not having ridden a skateboard in 25 years, I’d be even less good at doing tricks. But this ain’t that kind of deck, Nosir. This sweet baby is a cruiser. Big. Ugly. COMFY. Add shock pads under the trucks and good quality wheels on there and you can cruise around all day long... skating like that brings JOY, just like a well-executed camouflage paint job.

So let’s put a pin in that and talk a little bit about camouflage, and what informs these ridiculous visions I have in my mind for these projects. Most of the time me and my mind operate like a fella riding a horse which is galloping down the road at breakneck speed. We blow by you and you holler at me “Hey Kenny X, where ya going?” And I holler back “I don’t know, man, ask the horse!”

... but occasionally I get the blessing of a glimpse into how my mind works and where my ideas actually come from- the underpinnings I mean.

I have always been struck by how much the splinter scheme on wings of Luftwaffe birds reminded me of vipers like copperheads and water moccasins. I mentioned that to Bruce yesterday actually while we were chatting. Just in passing. But it stuck. See here:

Image

He’s got it all! Earth tones. Geometric patterns. And modulation!

And look at the lighter shades for a moment...

And now have another look at my splinter camo with the overspray:

Image

It hit me like a ton of bricks that I was subconsciously trying to emulate a copperhead with this paint job the whole time! Without knowing it. And when I looked at it, after wrapping it up with a few small touch-ups and additions, I was overwhelmingly pleased with the effect. Contrast that to the absolute hatred I felt toward my first two failed attempts. Oh man! So apparently there’s something buried deep in my mind that makes me like Luftwaffe subjects because it thinks it’s real important to paint schemes which are reminiscent of copperheads. Which begs the question- “I wonder why the Hell that is!? What’s so important about copperheads?”

Also, when trying to map-out how I wanted this camo to look, I Googled “field-applied Luftwaffe camo” and ended up falling down an interesting rabbit hole. Check out these helmets:

Image

Image

Image

By the time I’d found those I wasn’t even thinking about airplanes anymore. But something in my head was looking for any clue as to what the Luftwaffe did with their camouflage modifications... and it makes sense. A huge point of frustration for me with this build was that I couldn’t find any photos at all of Pips’ Emil which showed the upper-wings, and honestly- the scheme given in the instruction booklet just doesn’t work for me. On one hand it doesn’t look like a copperhead at all. On the other, it doesn’t look Luftwaffe to me either. I have no idea why. It just doesn’t feel right, I don’t think the ground crews applied RLM 02 on swirls with a mop and bucket. But I freely admit I could be totally wrong. Always remember- I don’t preach. I am not the end all be all of Luftwaffe knowledge. None of these ideas are “fixed”, they’re always evolving as I learn and this is purely a Polaroid photo of where my mind is at the moment.

Anyway, I can see the influence of those helmets finding its way into my work on this, informing it... and I think that’s really interesting.

The brain is an amazing thing. All these connections from one thing to the next. And if for example I need help with a challenging camo scheme and I can’t find info which relates directly to my subject, the good old brain goes flipping through the files and finds something, ANYTHING which maybe can relate. This time it was copperheads. And those helmets informing the vision AND giving me fodder for other ideas for things.

Now, back to my skateboard...

Since I’m building this thing myself to my specifications, why not have some fun with the grip tape? Instead of just unrolling basic black onto that beautiful deck, why no get a few rolls, in earth tones, slice it to pieces, and did a splinter scheme like this:

Image

That might look real sharp on that deck! So I’m considering that, now. Might have to go to the skate shop this weekend and see what they have in terms of colored grip tape. I think this is a mighty cool idea!

Anyway, thank you as always for your candor and support and for being good friends of mine and for letting me go on and on about my ideas and why I have them and where they come from. I like this community a lot. I’m lucky to be a part of it.

Y’all have a great weekend out there!

Sure you'll have no trouble getting back into it. My niece got a board for her birthday this year and I was surprised that after 10+ years I still had my balance. As for camo we have always turned to the animal kingdom. Like you have noted with snakes like the copperhead also look at a owl in a tree or the master of camo the octopus. Good luck with the board Kenny!
