Harley Fate’s 18 hp Plymouth Diesel Locomotive, c.1912

I am currently building this "Backwoods Beauty" from Foley Car Shops in On3 (1:48 scale) which runs on HO track. The kit was designed by Fran Foley and Tom York. This is 3D printed resin by Fran Foley with brass details. The contraption that moves it - the drive motor - is designed and built by Northwest Shortline (NWSL). Both kit and drive are made to order items.

Harley Fate? Any relation to Professor Fate?

Not sure, truly! Should I know him? (After Google) Jack Lemmon! I remember Professor Dark from “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (played by Jonathan Pryce) scared me as a wee lad by the side of a ditch. So I delved into an accuracy issue and fixed what I found: I changed out the too short rear cab bunker by adding an acrylic riser and growing it to the height seen in the photo. I spent a lot of time doing this but I don’t care because it is right. It may be too tall now; but that is easier to finesse. Easier to take away! And thank the maker for the eventual use of Milliput. That will be useful for smoothing out the joins; I was close, very close, with my work, but still and yet the seam must disappear.

Upon further reflection, I will bet my bottom dollar that the bunker contains a rectangular shaped fuel cell or tank fitted inside. Otherwise, where would it be?

IIRC, the bunker is where coal or wood is kept on steam engines. Although on an internal combustion engine, I suppose a fuel oil tank could go there. Fuel bunkers is a term also used on naval vessels.

Yes, Professor Fate is Jack Lemmon. Peter Falk his trusty sidekick Max. Both from the comedy The Great Race. My dad loved that movie and I can’t remember how many times that I watched it.

Doing some great work Bruce! A bit of filling and sanding with milliput will fix that right up.

Lo, Floki said there would be much merriment with Milliput and indeed there was much slathering and shaping to blend, blend, blend;



There was also some usage of Zoukei Mura’s GK primer in both grey and black. Black bring the final color coat; and then there was Tamiya Gloss Black and Navy Blue as well;



Lo, there was much usage of Tamiya Abrasives as well, mainly in the 320-800 range of grits;
