That's going to depend on which medium you use, oils or acrylics. I can give you pointers on oils, but I don't use acrylics other than as a base tone. Remember to have a can of "Oven Cleaner" handy for reworks. I do it myself all the timeBlackSheep214 wrote:Hmm... maybe I'll start off on a cheap priced figure to begin with - something I don't care about if I mess up or not.
I really don't know the basics aside from black primer. Mainly flesh tones, shadows, etc... I may have to watch youtube videos or read how-to books.

You're way ahead of the game, Brother. My wife says I still haven't grown up, HA!Stikpusher wrote:BlackSheep214 wrote:I wanna be like Ski when I grow up on figure painting.

Me too, John. There's been quite a few things out of my norm on this set, socks and kilts being the main. But that flag, at first glance it was daunting.tempestjohnny wrote:I was thinking the same thingmustang1989 wrote:I'm still trying to get over the fact that the patterns on those socks were hand painted. Ski, my wife says the same thing
"Surely I have made my meaning plain? I intend to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I have deprived your ship of power, and when I swing 'round, I intend to deprive you of your life."

To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

Too late, we're past the point of maturity at our age. That's why our wives shake their heads and walk away, HA!

Ok... why not acrylics? Better question, oils. I’m assuming you’re not talking about enamels. I know you don’t use acrylics but what about Vallejo acrylics for figure painting? Vallejo has a wide variety of colors.SteveSki wrote:That's going to depend on which medium you use, oils or acrylics. Good question. Vallejo, like others now, has a great range of tones, so if acrylics are your choice, you're good. I used to use enamels way back when until I was introduced to oils. Enamels and acrylics are the same to me, too much work, IMHO, which is why I enjoy using oils. You will never get acrylics to blend like oils. They have their place, but I rarely use them for other than a base tone.

If I can ever get this good, I'll be happy camper!
If you go with acrylics there's a boat load of vids on YT to get you started. It's really just a matter of diving in, Bro, go for it!
