Vintage Monogram 1/48 scale P-38 Lightning

Post by BlackSheep214 »

I’m calling this one 95% done until I get white numbers decals for the tail rudder and nose. This one is done as a F-58 Photo Reconnaissance Lightning in light blue synthetic blue. Some weathering done behind the superchargers using Tamiya weathering sets. The decals had very little yellowing so some concern whether they will adhere or not. So far, they haven’t given me issues until I spray a coat of flat clear to seal them in. I will be hanging this one on my ceiling - most likely the last one since my “air space” is getting crowded as it is. :giggles:

My thoughts on the kit…

It has brought back fond memories of my first time building this exact kit back in the 70s - warts and all. I did my best to build it better than when I was a 12 year old kid. I certainly did but the same nightmares of my building past of this kit still showed up but I tackled it as best as I can. The difference is I built the fighter version as a 12 yr old. This time, I took on the challenge to convert to a Photo Reconn version when a bit of surgery was involved. So, here are the photos…

Very nice looking finish Tom! Is this gonna be a ceiling hanger, or do you maybe have a stand for this?

I do have one but I don’t think it’ll work due to belly tanks getting in the way. I’ll have to see…

Cool subject Tom. I had no idea there were blue p-38 variants. Great discussion prompting much googling. White numbers will look great on this.
Thanks,
John

I found a stand that once belonged to the vintage 70s Star Trek’s Romulan Bird-of-Prey kit. Good enough for me.

Ah cool - you finished it. A cracking build Tom, that looks awesome, especially in that Blue!

Well done, Tom!

Last night I sprayed a coat of flat clear over whatever decals I applied on. I was worried they were gonna lift overnight considering its age. Thankfully, they didn’t.
