Thanks guys! It's diorama sand. Package says that it's supposed to be gravel.

Definitely, needs grass. Difficult to say which, they all look very good and suitable for the base.

I find it amazing to see how simply placing a model on a simple pad like that completely changes the model and it suddenly becomes real. Keep going.
