SBD-5 Dauntless - Matchbox 1/32

Post by LyleW »

I mentioned in Chris' thread that I had not completed an SBD. If I have it was likely a hundred years ago or so it seems.

Remembered I have the VERY OLD Matchbox 1/32 SBD-5 kit in the stash and actually found it. Box is in rough shape, taped together. . . copyright date on box is 1977, I guess I'll need to go through the kit and inventory the parts as nothing is in bags, but only one item is loose.

I think the decals are toast, though. What do you think?

I'm not sure when or if I'll start this one. Looks like the main pieces are in good shape and it is not a huge parts count for a 1/32 scale aircraft.

That looks like fun. I wonder if there are aftermarket decals since Trumpeter released a 1/32 SBD.
Thanks,

Not sure when I’ll start this.

Ther are some, not a lot, though. Canopy mask are another issue.

That's an old kit. I suspect mid 70s? Im.sure there are aftermarket decals out there if those decals look like crap.

1977, maybe? That’s when it was copyrighted. Crap would be an improvement!

Cool - I didn't know MB did a Dauntless.

Looking forward to seeing it when you do build it Lyle!

Lyle I built this kit when it first came out, so my memory is quite hazy on details of that. I don’t remember any problems, but then again I was probably in junior high at the time and my standards weren’t too exacting. I just remember enjoying the fact that I had a 1/32 SBD. But it couldn’t drop its’ bomb like my 1/48 Monogram SBD could. What I do remember is that it was not as well detailed as some of my other 1/32 kits. It is a nice canvas for scratch building details if you feel so inclined. I remember seeing one in a local hoppy shop that had been converted to a -3 variant back in the early 90’s and it was beautifully done.
