Large scale PT-109

Post by BlackSheep214 »

As a young teen, I received a large scale PT-109 that JFK commandeered for Christmas. Ive been looking for it for years but could not remember the kit brand or scale. I do know it came with a battery compartment and motor you can install as an option it came with the model kit you can float in the water (ie: pool, pond, or wherever). I know it did use it in our pool back in the day.
I also do remember it had JFK manning the deck machine gun (I think.it can swivel in any direction but not 100% sure).

Ive looked in scalemates several times to try to remember the box art but none stood out in my memory. Perhaps they changed the box art? I dont know.

The reason is I'd love to build it again.

I also did build the vintage Revell smaller scale and want to build it again if I can find it.

I remember it was about 3 1/2 to 4 feet long at best. Not the same box but definitely similar box art.

In my opinion, John’s correct. The Lindberg kit is one big model.

And I still wonder how this happened.....

John F. Kennedy’s PT-109 was rammed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri in the early hours of August 2, 1943, in the Solomon Islands

If I remember right, they were idling in a channel on a moonless night, waiting for Japanese shipping to appear on the usual supply runs. They had no radar so we’re working only by what they could see. The destroyer saw them first at a close distance and was able to ram and destroy the PT boat before the PT could maneuver out of the destroyers path.

Italeri makes a much more current tooling 1/35 scale 80’ Elco MTB kit in both PT 109 fit and late war fit

Same basic hull, but the late war MTBs packed a lot more firepower based upon wartime experience gained.
