1/25 MPC "Spirit of '57" Gasser

Post by mustang1989 »

I wanted to venture back into familiar territory after a 9-month long armor project with an automotive build that I can use a bit of artistic license on and still get this done in a 3–5-month time span.

I chose this kit because it's got a little history. I built this kit.....er actually....it was my cousins kit that he got for Christmas when I was 12 our so. Needless to say he wasn't very happy that I built it with no paint and pretty much assembled in around an hour or so.....and it looked it. lol. We've always gotten along well so it ended up being water under the bridge for him and we moved on. I plan on building this kit in the maroon color scheme that you'll see on the box top but adding a good set of wheels and tires to replace the anemic wheels in the kit. I think I have got the choice down and will post up pictures when I have the wheels. I will be spending some bucks on a good set of aluminum wheels for it to set everything on this car off in a better style. I'll also be replacing the VERY basic small block Chevrolet in the kit with a blown small block Chevrolet from the Moebius Nova Gasser kit and adding a few details along the way. My aim here is to have some good fun and make a decent turn out of this kit from memory lane.

Good one!
To make each build less crappy than the last one. Or, put another way, "Better than the last one, not as good as the next one!"..

I'm a few updates in so you should be seeing something soon on this one Lyle. I've definitely missed the familiarity of automotive subjects. :giggles:

I, too, built that kit back in the early 80s. Fond memories. I did grab the same kit a couple years back and will definitely be following this one.

I’m constantly on the lookout for vintage auto kits of my youth/teen years and have acquired quite a few as well. High on my list is the vintage MPC Dodge 4x4 Camper with motor bike. Hard to find yet asking for stupid money for them if you find it. :giggles:

I've gotta tell ya Tom.......this kit has its issues.

1. Flash: EVERYWHERE
2. Mold lines: :headslap:
3. Wheels suck...next
4. Chrome looks like hammered doggy doo-doo
5. Engine: Terrible
6. Shocks look like extra sprue pieces

I spent 3 hours in cleaning the parts up before I started even looking at painting.

I'm not surprised. Even back then, the flip nose assembly never could sit right. But we will soldier on to whip thus one into shape.

That's a really cool subject - looks like a lot of fun. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it Joe.

I really must have a stab at building a car one day. I'd still like to build the rig from Smokey and the Bandit, but I've always fancied having a go at a 40/41 Willys Gasser too.

You should build a car Stuart! Being from the UK I'll recommend the Revell Land Rover series III LWB. Outstanding kit and doesn't have to be all shiny - weathered mine a bit. Just a fantastic kit with tons of options.

Sorry Joe - hijack over :giggles:
