Why aircraft?

I do like starting random topics of conversions – so here’s one…

why ARE aircraft the most popular modelling subject - and why military and not civil?

WHAT is it about aircraft that get us building them - why not cars or trucks or tractors or something else we see far more of everyday than Aircraft? - Shopping carts maybe?

what d'ya think? (and in Mannys terms - answer this, then go build and post some WIP )

Aircraft vs armor: who wants to crawl when he can fly?

Military vs civil: who wants to drive a bus when he can be the hottest, fastest and deadliest thing in the sky?

I know my interest in aircraft started because at at five my mother told me the (three) aircraft books in the house where my dads. So I thought "if dad likes aircraft I will have read those"! And that is how it al started.

That brought back some memories. My dad must have build stick and paper at one time, because I remember one in the house that I played with while watching "Sky King". I have no idea whatever happened to that plane, but I remember it was red. My dad was also one of the first two air traffic controllers hired in Louisville KY in 1947 and was a private pilot. So, I guess I was doomed.

joking aside, Its almost impossible for me to have grown up NOT liking aircraft.

I came form an Air Force family for one; My father was in the air force, both my maternal grandparents were both in the airforce, (my grandfather flew on B-52s during Vietnam, and later the RC-135s at Offutt).

I have always lived under the Offutt Flight path and grew up with RC's flying overhead.

My Aunt flies commercially for FedEx and would always bring us airplane-themed gifts wrapped in old IFR maps.....

Yeah, I grew up in a heavily aviation influenced family. My father worked for TWA, after his stints in the Army and Air Force Reserve. I remember going thru his closet when I was a boy and finding his B-3 flight jacket and Aircrew wings. Talk about a find for a little boy! Then there were the constant trips to the TWA hanger to pick up his check on pay days.he would take me inside the jet liners that were in for maintenance and show me all of the aircraft. We flew a lot for his vacations to far off places, back when people would dress up to travel, the stewardesses were glamour girls, and the service was service, not herding cattle like today. Then of course the giants of Aerospace were the major employers here building aircraft and rockets, and there were multiple air bases nearby. All four services flew the skies here in nearly every category of aircraft. You could not have lived here and not be touched by aviation somehow or someway...

Some really interesting post guys - as for me I guess I've just always been interested in them, I gre up reading Commando mangizines and reading Flypast. I've always been into everything military but aircraft have always interested me - which is surprising as all of my family are truckers. I didn't build many kits as a kid funnily enough - well not properly anyway - I used to slap them together unpainted with the decals on.
When I left school I trained and an A&P for three years and spent 7 years working on an airfield before I left and got into manufacturing. But they'll always be an interest and part of my life.
and I build military stuff because as well as the history factor (I love history) - They're way cooler!

I grew up in a Marine and Air Force family. With a few from the Army, Navy and even the Coast Guard thrown in here and there.

For me, it has always been aircraft,,,,,from watching touch and goes at the local airport to begging to tag along to one of the many small air shows during the sixties.

I did have some armor models now and then,,,and a few ships,,,,,but, I always go back to the aircraft models that pile up in my stash.

Once I worked in Navair in the Marines,,,,,,I was doomed from then on, lol. I have more Phantoms and Skyhawks than a naval Air Wing did back in the heyday of those types.

But, I will admit that those little tiny Jeeps, Landrovers and tow tractors are kinda neat in 1/72 scale,,,,,,and that I have a few of those, too, lol.
