As for the naval designation, most aircraft at the time were designated based on the manufacturer/production: (status prefix)(type)(manufacturer sequence)(manufacturer code) -- (configuration number) (general purpose/modifications). So, for the P-51, the operational model wold not have the X/Y prefix, F for fighter, 1 for manufacturer sequence (making the FJ Fury the second plane ordered from North American--F2J Fury?), J for the manufacturer code, and configuration 5 (a model mustang is 1, b mustang is 2, c is 3, d is 4, H/J would be 5), and I figured it might have a special purpose designator to show that it is a navalized version, but Im not sure what the code would be; (N was for nightfighter, C for carrier??); Thus F1J-5(C)
