At least that is what I would like to say. But there is also the actual battleship Yamato. So it could be that he toke that as his nickname.

Ship are the same.. but the anime is about the Space Battleship Yamato
My nickname are from Battle Ship Yamato and my Avatar , (yattaran from another Leji Matsumoto anime ) is buiding the Yamato as usual

When the anime was produced , the wreck of the yamato was not yet discovered and no one knows that the ship was break in two after the sunk
