Airfix Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I 1/72

Post by KSaarni »

Hello all,

here is my next project, that started already some time ago. Unfortunately Christmas-vacation is over and suddenly there is not that much bench time as "before".

Here is the object, Airfix new 1/72 kit of the legendary Boulton Paul Defiant.
The build will be the same as the cover-art.

Image

The kit is very well done and engineerd, as with the Wildcat. It's really a joy (even if not too challenging) to build a kit of this quality!

Image

Some test-fitting... everything really "locks" into place, wonderful kit all in all!
Image

Work starts, as more or a less always, from the "internals"...

Image

The Yahu instrument panel in place.
I had to cut and slightly reform the Yahus instrument panel, so it would fit in the cockpit. Something it did not really do (argh), so I had to adjust it, by cutting and moving it downwards ~1 mm to make it fit.

With canopy on I guess that will not be noticed. But then again, it might be difficult to see this wonderful piece of art... Will see..

Nevertheless, here the Yahu-IP in place..

Image

I bought also nicer gun barrells...

And here she is, wings and stabilizers in place... waiting for next steps..

So let's see what will be next!

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. What scheme are you going to do?

Very nice!

I saw some of those Yahu IP's... :hmm: ...last year some time. But just for 1/32. Magnificent little pieces of art!
I picked up this kit, not too long ago, and am kinda itchin to get to it!

A really good, healthy start, Kari. The IP looks very good.
Somehow, I always thought the Defiant had four turret guns. Perhaps that was the night-fighter version.

Thanks BlackSheep!

I will do the one that is on the cover page of the box, 264 Squadron, Martlesham Heath, Suffolk in England in July 1940.
The classic Battle of Britain camo in other words.

Thanks and you are absolutely right! The turret has 4 guns.

I put those 2 + 2 turrets in the picture just to see the difference between after market parts and box-parts

I'm starting to like Airfix kits a lot for they've really stepped up their game slamming out great kits.

Nice start there Kari, I've got a couple of these to build in the stash myself (one of which being from the Dogfight Double, which was my Xmas present  ), so will be looking forward to seeing how yours turns out!
