1/48 Tamiya P-51 Mustangs (Scat VI and Jasper's Joker II)

Post by lawdog114 »

I figured I'd drop in and show what I've been up to lately. I built these two Tamiya Mustangs at the same time for two separate people. It's all about efficiency :quotes: . The first being Robin Olds' 479th FG "Scat VI" and the second being "Jasper's Joker II", flown by Don Vulgamore of the 361 FG. Olds flew in two wars and is a 14 kill ace, so he needs no introduction. Vulgamore is lesser known but his plane is often built. Three swastikas on the canopy indicate 3 kills. Ace or not, they are all heroes to me.

Scat got PE in the pit and an Ultracast seat. I added a set of Ultracast wheels too. I tried out the new Eduard Brassin resin 108 gas tanks. I wasn't particularly impressed and found them to be more work to assemble than they were worth. I still hate the look of these tanks, much preferring the 75'ers. The canopy is a Hasegawa replacement which is much better than Tamiya's two piece abomination. I added plumbing to the tanks and gears. The lousy fifties were replaced with brass tubing.

Next is Jasper's Joker. This one was out of the box aside from a PE seatbelt harness and Ultracast tires. I plumbed this one and added brass fifties as well. The recipient of Joker wanted the canopy closed, so I made due with the abomination of a kit canopy. I suppose it looks ok closed.

It's my understanding that Eduard has a new new tooled 1/48 Mustang coming out in 2018. Let's hope the Spitfire MK IX team gets that assignment

Thanks for looking...
Can you fly this plane and land it? Surely you can't be serious? I am serious, and don't call me Shirley

Oh yes, and you're provin' it! I wrote many praises for your work in the past and I'm lost for words when I'm looking at those marvelous twins.
Always a pleasure to see your work, Joe. Thank you.
