I've been thinking about that on occasion for a few months now. I'm going to spray a base coat of silver followed by several coats of AK Interactives Weathering Effects chipping fluid. Then a coat of acrylic IJN Green. I won't paint much of the port wing because so much appears to be chipped.

I was watching a video on that last night. I think I need to pick some of that up. Looks easier to use than hairspray.

It's very easy to use and it can be applied with a brush to target areas if you want.

You can also use rubber cement for the same purpose.

Interested to see the chipping on this one. I've had very mixed results with the hairspray method and may look at a modeling-specific solution. Anyone sniff a bottle of the AK or MiG chipping solutions? Curious to know if they just repackaged some hairspray!

I decided to go Alclad White Aluminum for the silver. After spraying the Alclad black primer and silver, I remembered I wanted to paint the DARK blue cowl and red tail. Oops, oh well, I'll mask of the cowl and tail and respray the silver once everything is dry.

I masked the black and red, applied the Alclad, the AK Interactive and then the IJN Green. I masked the areas where the green seems to have been chipped along the panels. Some of the areas I didn’t spray because the paint was missing. I will start the chipping in earnest tomorrow.

Your work is beautiful! Such a pleasure to watch the primary and secondary layers come together. Thank you so much for posting the archival research images at the beginning; this helps refresh and put your target goal up front. One thing that happens often for me - being far less versed in military aircraft history - is I will need to do an Internet look up of an actual version of the subject for context. Thank you for provinding this up front on your builds.

John, thinking about your question regarding the AK Interactive's product chemistry I took a few sniffs of the fluid. No odder at all and on the bottle it says acrylic fluid. I've been erroneously calling it weathering effects, when it's Worn Effects. I really like it although it usually takes two coats to get the paint to chip correctly.
