Model News 1/72 P-51H

Post by BorgR3mc0 »

I have posted very little due to the Photobucket problems. But now these have been resolved (thanks to Postimage.org) I can let you see what is happening in the model hive.

This is Model News 1/72 P-51 H. Model News is an unsuccessful short run manufacturer from the 90's which made two different Mustang kits. These are "second generation " short run kits, not as bad as Merlin or Beechnut but still very rudimentary. I have only found one review and one build on the internet of this kit. Main point of critique is that this kit is inaccurate. The fuselage is not deep enough for an H model and looks more like a standard D according the the build I saw. That guy had replaced it with a vacform fuselage.
I paid €1,50 for this kit at the Aviationmegastore yard sale in 2005. All the pieces are there but no instructions. I am building this on vacation so no airbrusing but just rattle cans.

The putty is on and sanding is done. Almost ready for the first paint. You can see the vaguely defined exhausts. And it is indeed more of a "D" fuselage without the distinct slope that the H has.

Yes, it is not a good kit and I cannot recommend it. If you want a nice H model buy the CMR or RS kit. But at €1,50 it is good value for money, not a big loss if I screw up and will keep me occupied during two weeks vacation.

Masked for the yellow bands. I am using rattle cans for this one (vacation =no airbrush) so I have masked every thing off.

Seems like a nice simple build! Looking forward to seeing the yellow bands!

The yellow bands are in, three layers. I masked them so I can do the black and metal.

Normally I would do black-metallic- yellow. Since I am using rattle cans (which spray a thicker layers) for this build I changed my sequence to yellow-black-metallic.

And the black is on. I masked the no glare and the black stripes bordering the yellow.

Next up , aluminium.

I am quite curious now to see what the final scheme is going to be with those wing stripes... :hmm:

The masking looks more impressive then scheme is. It is just a yellow band bordered by thin black stripes on each wing.
