I saw plenty of these beasts in the Balkans. They are some of the loudest choppers I have seen and heard in person. I think the only US choppers that I've seen up close that compare are the Sikorsky H-3 & H-53 types.

Amazingly enough, I saw one of these flying just off the coast of Destin, Florida a couple years back with my friend Maurice who drove up from Miami to see me. I was there for my last class reunion and we took some time to head out to Destin. One of those beasties flew by close enough to unmistakably identify. That blew us both away!

Around that time, it was reputed that the aviators who had the current most flight hours in Hips and Hinds were the US Army aviators assigned to fly them for the OPFOR at JRTC at Ft Polk,LA. I'm willing to bet that those same birds were also used in the Florida areas to the south where the snake eaters play.
