Stikpusher wrote:Stuart and Blacksheep, thanks for the compliments. Well last nite after work and first thing this morning was a crash program to get this Friedrich done. Why? Because a local shop was sponsoring a contest, an Airfix Aeroplanes contest to be precise. And I completed this. It shows signs of rushed work, compared to most of my builds. Deadlines are the bane of quality builds!

But here it is at the time of completion

and I did take Third Place in the 1/48 Single Seat, Single Engine Propellor category... not too bad... first and second place were some of the new tool kits, so I feel decent about holding my own against those...

I'll get proper photos up tomorrow. I have a family gathering this evening.

Much deserved win. Congratulations, Carlos!

ADDENDUM: I know you completed the weathering steps to finish before the contest deadline, but would you summarize for us how you did this because the weathering turned out darn well, not too much, just right and realistically done. Thanks, please and thanks!

Many thanks guys, I appreciate all the support and kind words! I am very happy to have placed, especially knowing the gaffes that I had in the finished build. These old Airfix kits can be a lot of fun. And end up looking pretty good too!

But this story is not over. I still want to come up with a base for this, and incorporate the Tamiya Kubelwagen or some other ground support stuff. I have a few months until next IPMS.

Beautifully done Friedrich, Carlos! The final weathering really sealed the deal on a great build. Congrats on a well deserved prize too!

That's a fine looking 109 Stik - I do have one question about the kit though, did you re-scribe that or was the kit recessed to begin with? And if they're raised panel lines - what did you do to them to make them look like that?

Bruce, Scruffy, John, and Stuart, thank you one and all for your kind words.

Bruce, speed was the issue here and limited work time with less than 12 hours remaining after I got home from work and needing a few hours sleep and a meal in that that time as well. In the wee hours of the night. I mixed up a couple washes of oils, black for the lower surfaces, and certain areas of the uppers, mostly around the engine, and burnt umber on the rest of the uppers. I applied them in all the recessed details and around the raised details. As soon as I woke up and got moving again, I cleaned up the wash work. On some raised areas, I did not feel there was enough wash left to emphasize those details, so I used a pencil to highlight those lines. And I applied some aluminum dry brushing to the leading edges of the wings, tail surfaces, and propellor blades using Testors small bottle flat aluminum. After that I airbrushed on a coat of Humbrol Matt Clear and gave that some time to dry. Then lastly I airbrushed on a thinned coat of Humbrol "Dust" wash. Light overall, but with heavier applications on the upper surfaces of the model, and heavier still on areas of the fuselage, wings, and tail that would get the most dust kicked up by landing gear on take off and landing. Then lastly I added the gun soot, exhaust stains, and some additional dusting on the wheels and struts using Tamiya weathering compacts.

Stuart, the kit has a combination of raised and recessed detail. Most, but not all of the wing panel lines were recessed. But most of the access panels, hatches, and latches were raised. I only rescribed those that were lost in seam clean up. On the fuselage nearly all detail was raised. Knowing that I would lose much in seam clean up, I rescribed much of that before hand. Although some were so small or ackwardly positioned that I could not get my scribing template in place to do that so a couple were replaced with simple strips of styrene cut to length and later sanded down to being raised just above surface. After a coat of paint they looked ok. And lastly I had found some strange raised circles near the tail on the sides, that when I looked at enough photos, determined were location holes for some kind of bar insert during maintenance. So I drilled those out and blanked off the insides so no light would shine thru.
