Yes, for self defense against other choppers. In the late Cold War there was the worry that they would have to square off against Warsaw Pact gunships. Such helicopter dogfights happened in the Iran Iraq War, and possibly also in Lebanon in 1982 during the Bekkaa Valley fighting. They also could carry the AGM-122 SideARM, an AIM-9C Sidewinder that had been converted into an Anti Radar Missile. Apaches have a similar capability, and also have an air to air Stinger capability.
