Aoshima 1/24 MG-B Mk I - 1967

Love the color of this one, light/pastel blue (or baby-blue)... I think white looks a little bit, "boring", looking for another color and yes, this blue is pretty perfect.
Challenge will of course be, to find this more or a less exact color.. and what brand etc etc.

Thanks Bruce for the link! Coincidence, I found exactly the same page, Googling just with "mg blue color"!
I see there is a number of codes, but I tried systematically to use those codes and search.. without really any success..

I am pretty sure the right blue is "Iris Blue". At least that is the one I like most.



So, decision is made, that will be the color, Iris blue.

But how to start to figure out, what could be the correct paint / color ?

Regarding paints I prefer / I use mostly acrylics from Mr Paint, Gunze and Tamiya. Though, none of those are really automobile colours. But my "local" hobby shop ("local" because it's 100 km / 62 miles away) has a big selection of Zero Paints.

Of course I did, with big excitement a search of "Iris" on Zero pains pages... without luck...

So indeed, now the challenge is to find the right color..

But Iris Blue it is!

SETBACK!

Today when starting to open the sprue bags, the first annoying setback came: Nr 33 !
Yup, part nr 33 is missing from the sprue!



I have checked, double-checked, re-checked the empty bags, my desk, floor, wastebasket, everywhere.
It does not exist anywhere !

Very annoying, but not a definitve show stopper, but still very annoying.
As the part will more or a less be hidden behind / inside the rim, hardly visibld I can "easily" scrathbuild something that works. Of course, the most important part is to make sure the axel will be steady and the wheel straight.. But visually should not be a too big issue... I hope...

Another slightly annoying detail is the tyres.. I had a little bit planned to paint the wheel side white, but when looking more carefully at the tyres, the entire side is "populated" with DUNLOP text.. And I think it's also oversized, not to scale at all...



As I see, three options.. (please 4th and more options are welcomed!)

a) Go with the Dunlop wheels
b) Scratching away the text, though big risk it will never be smooth enough due to rubber tyres
c) Looking towards the AM market

So, I think b) will drop off and the remaining options a) and c) staying on the table...

So let's see what to do...

Can you cast a replacement for the lost part in resin?

I am upset too! What a piece to go missing!! Perhaps it was long gone before you found the kit? Anyway, I also see the same options, although I would add Dieter Jens of Jens Scale Racing as a possible resource. Dieter has a great inventory of resin replacements and AM for interior and exterior detail sets. I do not know if he has specific parts for your subject, though, but he certainly could be a source for tires/wheels!

In theory yes, but in practice no. Have never done that excersise and not really eager go that way. Resin casting is definitely something I would want to learn to do some day, but not now.

I will scratchbuild the piece, will not be too complicated, especially as it will be hidden deep in the rim. The challenge is to get the axel hole aligned perfectly...

Thanks Bruce, I think so too. Either it was the previous owner who took a look at the sprue bags and that piece fell out.
Unfortunately I have found another missing piece:



So when I scratchbuild nr 33, i must "integrate" the "poly cap" into the construction... And then we are fine to go! :-)

Thanks also for the alternative suggestions, as this piece is not a show stopper, I will manage to make a "poor mans copy" of it.

Time to turn the frown upside down with a new #33!





How are you making this??? I’m curious. I would probably cut and shape a round form from plastic... but I am curious to see how you approach thinking through this.

Cut / stamp out a circle from plastic card?

Again I am afraid I might do things too complicated...

The break disc was made by cutting 2 plastic discs of evergreen plastic sheet, then glued together to have the right thickness.
Then I drilled a hole in the middle, to see how it fits the rim, added the (in the picture very rough) break caliper (first time in my life I use that word in English, had to check it up what it was) etc. In the picture still unpolished and unsanded. I am sure when it's painted it becomes a little bit better...

(I don't have any tools to stamp it out, which would be of course ideal)



I know this piece is very rough, and will not get that many style points ( if any) .... but seriously, it will not be visible at all and the main goal is that the axel sits tight and nicely in the rim / wheel... Even the break caliper will disappear out of sight.... BUT, nice still to try to make something out of it.

With the last part, the bulge (whatever it is called officially), I am still struggling. Have not really found any nice piece that would sizewise fit there... So still looking around in my drawers, boxes, etc etc...
