Post by Bolleken »

Hi guys,

today I want to show you my brand-new Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-28K "FOXSHARK" by Matchbox Next Generation in 1:72 scale.
On Monday I will provide the history behind the famous "Red 86".
Hint: The story of Top Gun movie had more truth than most of us know...

Awesome work!!!!
And yes, those of us with clearance know the real story...

Hey—this project turned out beautifully, Marius! You certainly transformed the kit. I can't even remember the kit or what the kit looked like or anything at all about the kit since you started your development. The graphite line work for panel separations works amazingly well—what a nice way to balance out the beautiful paint job—all those layers!!! wow! Once again you have created the "what if" beautifully. Bravo!

Here is the untold story of the Indian Ocean incident and the mysterious "Red 86":

After more than a year of construction with long breaks, the model was completed last Friday.

We all know the MiG-28 from the Hollywood blockbuster "Top Gun": An action movie and a commercial for the American military based on a fantasy story.

But in reality everything has happened very similar, the film is based on a true story.

In 1986 in the sky above the Indian Ocean, a cold dogfight took place between the two superpowers. The incident was not permitted to be anywhere documented and it was classified as top secret on both sides. The incipient relaxation between the US and the Soviet Union was not to be endangered. So the world never heard of this dogfight.

Early morning, 1st of April: The Soviet nuclear aircraft carrier "Kaliningrad" was traveling in the Indian Ocean east of Somalia. Likewise, the "USS Enterprise" was traveling in these waters. Both ships were steering on a crossing course. When the crew of Kaliningrad registered the Enterprise five MiG-28K, NATO code "Foxshark" were sent to surprise and impress the Americans. A short time later, the Kaliningrad and the MiGs were discovered by the Enterprise. To catch first two, and later two more F-14A Tomcats were started.
So it came in the immediate vicinity of the Enterprise to a dogfight, which, however, did not come to the firing of weapons. But there were virtual kills.

My model shows the MiG-28K of Igor Maverikow, the "RED 86". This pilot virtually shot down one F-14.
Pilots on both sides were allowed to fire there missiles under different circumstances. But this luckily never happened.
I built it from the MiG-28K Kit PK-1012 by Matchbox Next Generation. Tip: The brand new kits from the Pink Series are available for 3 € not only in toyshops, but also at almost every shop and at fuel stations.
